Godzilla Gallery.

 

[The final project in the first year was to design a small contemporary gallery in PI Del Duc De Medinacelli in Barcelona. The gallery must contain a permanent gallery to fit the 6 artworks we chose during our visit to Barcelona, a temporary gallery to exhibit the daily photographs we took in Barcelona, and a private studio for the artist we chose—in my case, Antoni Tapies.

 

The design follows my initial interest in architecture which is deconstructivism. The plan potrays a ‘journey’, in which it directs people from the

temporary gallery, to a passage with two sideways exit doors towards the sculpture garden, to the permanent gallery, and finally to the café. 

 

On the external surface, the façade of the gallery is constructed of light stone tiles whilst the café uses reflective aluminum. The reason is to 

let people differentiate from the outside between the two buildings if they happen to only want to visit the café. Opposite the separate entrance 

to the café is a road towards a church on far other end—thus people sitting in the upper floor of the café are able to view the church. 

 

The sculpture gardens are lowered below the ground level of the building and are fortressed by black marble walls. This shows that the area is private though people can still catch a glimpse from above. However, they will not be able to experience the same view than to the people that pay to get inside the gallery.]
